Join Outdoor Chattanooga for a guided and equipped kayak tour at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge to view the migrating Sandhill Cranes and the occasional White Pelican. The Hiwassee Refuge is located at the confluence of the Tennessee and Hiwassee Rivers about one hour north of Chattanooga near the town of Birchwood. The early morning exploration along the perimeter of the 400-acre Hiwassee Island offers the best chances to see and hear the wildlife. This refuge area attracts a variety of birds due to its combination of cultivated, forested, and interior wetlands and Sandhill Cranes begin to migrate here in November, with peak season mid December to mid January. All kayak equipment and the guided tour is included in the price. We utilize recreational kayaks that fit most body types (kayak weight limit is 250). Previous kayak experience is helpful due to the colder time of year, but not necessary to participate. The tour is about 2 hours on the water. Appropriate for ages 16 and up when accompanied by a participating adult. Cost: $35 per person. Registration and payment are required in advance as space is limited. Registration opens 2 weeks advance of program date.
