About this Course

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park historians have partnered with Outdoor Chattanooga to offer a unique opportunity that combines recreation with immersive history. Participants will retrace one of the most significant operations of the Civil War's Chattanooga Campaign. In the early morning hours of October 27, 1863, approximately 1,500 Union soldiers boarded boats in Chattanooga and floated down the Tennessee River to launch a successful amphibious assault at historic Brown's Ferry. Their victory helped open the "Cracker Line," restoring vital supply routes to the besieged Union Army in Chattanooga. This guided program recreates that historic journey as participants paddle kayaks four miles down the Tennessee River to Brown's Ferry. Along the way, park historians will share the story of the assault, its strategic importance, and its lasting impact on the campaign. The paddle covers approximately four miles and takes about three hours. Outdoor Chattanooga provides kayaks, paddles, personal flotation devices (PFDs), experienced guides, and transportation back to participants' vehicles after the paddle.
