About this Course

Sandhill Crane Viewing Tour by Kayak ~Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge Paddle with purpose this winter as you join Outdoor Chattanooga for a guided and fully equipped kayak tour of the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge, one of the most spectacular birdwatching destinations in the Southeast. Located at the scenic confluence of the Tennessee and Hiwassee Rivers, just an hour north of Chattanooga near Birchwood, this refuge hosts thousands of migrating Sandhill Cranes each year, along with the occasional American White Pelican and many other waterfowl and wading birds. Your early morning tour will explore the quiet perimeter of Hiwassee Island, a 400-acre protected sanctuary rich in cultivated fields, wetlands, and forested habitat—ideal for viewing wildlife. November through January marks peak migration season, offering unforgettable sights and sounds as cranes gather in the misty river valley. All kayak equipment and the guided tour is included in the price. We utilize recreational kayaks that fit most body types (kayak paddler weight limit is 250). Previous kayak experience is helpful due to the colder time of year, but not necessary to participate, as instructional support is provided. The tour is about 2 hours on the water. Appropriate for ages 16 and up when accompanied by a participating adult. Cost: $35 per person. Registration and payment are required in advance as space is limited. Registration opens 2 weeks advance of program date. Additional program information will be shared by your trip leaders to your email account 3 days before the class.
