Discover the wonders of the great outdoors with Outdoor Chattanooga's Silver Adventures, for adults aged 50 and above. This adventure provided by the National Park Service at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park offers a guided hike to narrate the battlefield history of Lookout Mountain. This hike will examine the difficulties faced by soldiers during the fog-enshrouded struggle that occurred on November 24, 1863, in which determined Union soldiers were pitted against destitute, yet defiant Confederates in one of the Civil War's most iconic battles - The Battle of Lookout Mountain. Participants will be able to hike the same terrain surmounted by soldiers 162 years ago, to witness fortifications designed to defend against any attack on the mountain's slopes, and to learn about the gambit of emotions faced by soldiers during and after the battle based upon their own writings. This moderately challenging trail is located near Craven's House of Lookout Mountain and is known for its scenic views and historical significance. The trail typically takes around 2 hours to complete with a leisurely pace and plenty of stops for interpretive discussion. Registration opens 2 weeks prior to the program and is required as space is limited. Additional trip information will be shared after registration.
