About this Course

Explore Local History- BY KAYAK!!! Join Outdoor Chattanooga and National Park Partners for a 2.5-hour guided kayak adventure tracing an important Civil War water route. Launching from North Chickamauga Creek and paddling to Rivermont Park, this unique tour follows the approximate path used in November 1863 by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. Prior to the famous November 25 assault on Missionary Ridge, Sherman needed to move his troops from the north side of the Tennessee River to the south. Using pontoon boats, his forces successfully bridged the river, setting the stage for the Battle of Missionary Ridge. Along the way, interpretations from a paddling guide with National Park Partners will share stories of the campaign, river crossings, and the challenges faced by soldiers during this pivotal moment in the Chattanooga Campaign. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how geography, waterways, and strategy shaped local and national history — all while enjoying a scenic paddle through calm waters. All kayak equipment is provided. NO experience is necessary!!! Reservations are required, as space is limited. Experience history from the water and see Chattanooga’s Civil War story from a whole new perspective.
