About this Course

Step back in time with a guided hike led by historian Jim Ogden through the Civil War fortifications atop Stringer’s Ridge on Moccasin Bend. This immersive outdoor experience takes participants to two historic 10th Indiana Battery positions whose hilltop locations offered history-changing views, and fields of fire—one eastward across the Tennessee River toward Chattanooga, the other south toward Lookout Mountain. The hike covers approximately 1.5 miles round-trip, involves moderate elevation changes of about 170 feet per hill, and lasts around 90 minutes. This program is provided in partnership with Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park & Moccasin Bend National Archeological District, National Park Partners—Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Moccasin Bend, and Outdoor Chattanooga. Free to participate. Follow the "Special Program" signs from Manufacture's Road just west of U. S. 27 to the parking area at approximately 200 Moccasin Bend Road. Free to participate. Registration is recommended as confirmation info will be sent 3–5 days prior to your email with meeting location on Moccasin Bend. Wear comfortable yet supportive footwear, clothing appropriate for the weather, a satchel to carry your water and bug spray. Group size is limited to 20 participants, with a minimum of 10 required.
